Mike Makinde has become the first golfer to win the Nigeria Cup three times after emerging champion at the 29th edition of the tournament at the Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos.
The 7-handicap golfer carded an impressive 65 net to win by four shots, finishing ahead of Anscy Okoebor, while Abiola Johnson placed third.
Makinde, who first won the prestigious tournament in 2022, successfully defended his title the following year before missing out to Tayo Babalakin in 2024 and Paul Tijani in 2025.
His victory at the weekend completed a remarkable return to the top and etched his name in the history of the Nigeria Cup as its first three-time winner.
“I’m excited and happy with the outcome of this tournament,” Makinde said after his victory. “Winning again is an important part of my golfing career.”
He attributed his success to hard work and thanked the organising committee for putting together what he described as a successful tournament. He also expressed confidence in recording more victories in the years ahead.
In the men’s gross category, Akeem Lawal emerged winner with 75 gross, while Calli Udalor finished second with 76. Peter Eben-Spiff placed third.
Adeyosola Ayodele won the ladies’ net category with 71 net, while Evelyn Oyome emerged winner in the ladies’ gross category.
Chairman of the 2026 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, Mohammed Oybo, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the week-long competition.
Oybo thanked the sponsors, members of the organising committee and participating golfers for their support and commitment to sustaining the tournament.
