The fourth edition of the Ikogosi Marathon is set to take place tomorrow, with approximately 13,722 registered participants, including Kenyan and Ethiopian nationals, further strengthening the event’s growing national and international appeal.

The 2026 Ikogosi 17.5km race will commence at 7:00 a.m. from Ilawe-Ekiti Roundabout and finish at the iconic Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort in Ekiti State.

Kenyan and Ethiopian nationals also participated in the 2025 edition, with different individuals from both countries registering for this year’s competition.

Founded in 2014 by Makinde Araoye, the marathon has experienced remarkable growth, from 241 participants in its inaugural 10km race to 3,786 registrations in 2019 and 6,569 in 2025.

This year’s approximately 13,722 registrations represent a 109% increase over 2025, underscoring its emergence as a significant event on Nigeria’s road-running calendar.

Speaking ahead of the race, Araoye stated:
“The Ikogosi Marathon was founded on the belief that sports can drive youth development, economic empowerment, tourism and community transformation. What began as a community race has grown into a platform for showcasing Ekiti State to Nigeria and the world. Our ambition is to establish a full 42.195km international marathon by 2027.”

The 2026 edition will feature male and female elite categories, alongside dedicated competitions for Ekiti State indigenes. First-place winners in the elite categories will each receive ₦2.5 million, while the leading male and female Ekiti indigene athletes will each receive ₦2 million.

Beyond athletics, the marathon promotes tourism, healthy living and economic opportunities for host communities, including hospitality businesses, transport operators, traders and local entrepreneurs.

Since inception, the initiative has been fully funded through the MKD ARAOYE Foundation, providing employment opportunities for young people and financial support to NYSC volunteers.

As the event expands, the organisers invite corporate organisations, multinational companies and development partners to explore strategic sponsorship opportunities, particularly towards achieving the initiative’s 2027 international marathon ambition.

“We are building more than a race. We are building a sustainable sporting institution capable of attracting international athletes, visitors and investment while creating lasting economic and social value for Ekiti State and Nigeria,” Araoye added.
