Newly signed Sevilla striker Akor Adams has risen in strong support for the Super Eagles as they take on Rwanda and Zimbabwe in their quest for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.
Adams who narrowly missed out from coach Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers said the Super Eagles have no option than get the six points at stake from the two matches.
Speaking on his inclusion on the Super Eagles 39-man provisional list, Adams said, “I have been working hard throughout my career and I am happy that I have finally received a mention even as I am just recovering from injury. I am grateful to be part of the coach’s plan, which shows that I am doing something right”
Akor who addressed a group of Nigerian journalists via zoom yesterday said he was settling down in Sevilla seamlessly. “I did not have to struggle for anything. The technical staff, the players and everybody in the club accepted me and I did not have to worry for anything,”he said.
Adams also spoke on the forthcoming derby against Real Betis, which he swore, his club would win. “There is only one club in Sevilla. The distance between us and Betis is about ten minutes drive. I have been told a lot about the rivalry. It is the biggest derby in Spanish football. It has become part of their culture and everybody looks forward to it,” he said, insisting, “we will claim the three points.”
The striker said he loves the competition among the strikers in the club. “I love the competition because if it is too easy, then it is not worth it. With the competition, anytime I am playing I am on my toes because I am aware there are others out there wanting to play too. I am in the best frame of mind and not under any pressure. I want to come to the stadium and score goals”
He praised his compatriots Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidera Ejuke who are also Sevilla’s players, saying, “they are great players. If they were not, Sevilla would not have signed them.”
Iheanacho is currently on a season-long loan th English Championship side, Middlesbrough.
Adams who moved to Sevilla from Ligue 1 giants Montpellier said the Spanish league had a tactical edge over the competition in France. “The big shock for me when I arrived was that first we were taken to the gym. After the gym, we had technical and physical exercises before entering the pitch. In LaLiga, you have more time to run with the ball, there is so much tactical and technical demands. It is a different ball game from Ligue 1.”
