Edo Queens FC of Benin Sunday won the third place match at the just concluded maiden edition of the Gov. Diri Douye Women Football Pre-Season Tournament played at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex Yenagoa Bayelsa State.
Having lost 4-2 to Bayelsa Queens in a penalty shootout in the semi’s, on Saturday, the highly experienced ladies from Benin came into the encounter with full determination and positive mindset.
Despite playing before a large football fanatical fans and under heavy rains, the Edo girls proved their superiority over Bayelsa princesses, whose aim was to spoil the party for them.
The newly recruited lanky striker Atume Doosuur broke the jinx in the 37th minute of play, through a penalty.
In the early minutes of the second half, precisely in the 53rd minute, she increased the tally to two goals bringing in more confidence and stability to her teammates.
It is important to note that Edo Queens played a total of six games, throughout the competition, won two and drew four. They were the only team that didn’t concede any goal in the group stages.
A total of 10 teams participated in the pre- season tournament, namely Abia Angels, Bayelsa Queens, Bayelsa Princesses, Delta Queens, Edo Queens, Heartland Queens, FC Robo, Imo Strikers and Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia.
In a highly tactical finals involving the host State Bayelsa Queens FC and Nasarawa Amazons FC, the Amazons edged out Bayelsa Queens 6-5 in a penalty shootout after 90 minutes of action without a goal.
