Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), announced that Nigeria will host the very first edition of the body, the African Nations League in 2029.
The announcement was made this weekend, at the covered hall of the Moulay Abdellah Complex in Rabat during a press conference.
Nigeria will first host the 16 countries of the West African region for the first phase of the competition, before hosting the winners from the CAF regions for the final phase, as specified by the South African leader.
This competition will be held every year, with the AFCON scheduled to be held every four years from 2028 onwards. Nigeria hosted the AFCON in 1980 and 2000 (with Ghana), being crowned champions in the first edition mentioned, then in 1994 in Tunisia and in 2013 in South Africa.
