The Oyo State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has appealled to the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, to reconsider its decision to banish Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) from playing their home matches at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan due to the previously poor condition of the football pitch.

The Oyo State sports writers while stating that they acknowledge the concerns raised by the NPFL regarding the playing surface, which led to this decision in the interest of player safety and the integrity of the league said, “we are pleased to note that there has been considerable improvement in the pitch’s condition following recent maintenance efforts”.

They stressed that the progress made “demonstrates a commitment to addressing the issues, and we believe it warrants a reevaluation to allow 3SC to return to their home ground, thereby preserving the club’s heritage and the enthusiasm of local fans”.

In addition to the plea to the NPFL, Oyo SWAN called on the Oyo State Government to prioritize the ongoing upkeep of the football pitch at Lekan Salami Sports Complex and other sporting facilities across the state.

The body stated that it is essential to implement proactive measures to prevent these vital assets from sliding into disrepair, ensuring they remain suitable for professional competitions and community use.

“Sustained investment in sports infrastructure will not only support our local teams but also foster youth development and promote sporting excellence in Oyo State,”, it said, adding, “We urge all stakeholders, including the NPFL, the Oyo State Government, and relevant authorities, to collaborate in resolving this matter swiftly for the benefit of Nigerian football”.
