‎The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Sports, Didier Budimbu, has struck a defiant tone ahead of his country’s anticipated showdown with Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing strong confidence in the national team’s ability to deliver a major upset.

‎Speaking during celebrations following DR Congo’s qualification, Budimbu made a bold remark directed at Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo. “Cristiano Ronaldo should cry when he faces DR Congo,” he declared, drawing loud cheers from an enthusiastic crowd.

‎DR Congo secured their place at the tournament after a 1–0 victory over Jamaica in a continental playoff final held in Guadalajara. The result marks the nation’s return to the World Cup after a 52-year absence, with their only previous appearance dating back to 1974.

‎Nicknamed the Leopards, DR Congo will open their campaign against Portugal on June 17 in what is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated fixtures of the group stage.
