Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, claimed a crucial 2-0 victory over Malawi in the first leg of their final qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup at the Remo Stars Stadium Saturday.
The Falconets delivered a composed performance in front of their home supporters, taking control of the tie ahead of the decisive second leg in Lilongwe.
Nigeria dominated possession from the outset, dictating the tempo of the game and pinning Malawi back for large spells.
Despite their control, the hosts were unable to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes, with the first half ending goalless.
The breakthrough came via an unfortunate own goal from a Malawi defender, handing the Falconets a deserved lead after sustained attacking efforts.
Gingered by the opener on a platter of gold, the Falconets pushed forward in search of a second goal to strengthen their advantage.
Their effort was finally rewarded when Ifeanyi Kindness found the back of the net, calmly finishing doubling Nigeria’s lead and putting the hosts firmly in control of the contest.
Malawi struggled to cope with Nigeria’s attacking intensity throughout the second half, as the Falconets combined disciplined defending with purposeful forward play to maintain their grip on the match. Taking a 2-0 advantage is a plus for Falconets who will face the Scorchers in the second leg on May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
