Preparations are in top gear for the 13th West Africa Deaf Football and 3rd West Africa Deaf Athletics Championships fixed for August 18th through 31st at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Nigeria is the defending champion of the twin event.
Speaking at a press conference during the week, President of the West Africa Deaf Sports Union Amuda Yusuf Ibrahim said the event which is being backed by the Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS), is being held as part of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the regional union. He acknowledged that despite some political differences among some member states, athletes from those countries will be coming to Nigeria for the games. “Sports is not politics,” he told a reporter.
Twelve countries including Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Ghana, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Togo and Senegal have confirmed participation.
With the games fast approaching, Anuda is calling on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies in the country to support them in ensuring that Nigeria played the good host. “We need both financial and material support, we need sponsors,” he cried out.
Apart from the soccer tournament, the championships will also feature athletics events like 4×100 and 4×400 Relays, Mixed Relays, 400 mtrs, 200mtrs and the 100mtrs dash.
President of the Nigeria Deaf Sports Federation Alhaji Dagbo Suleiman said that Team Nigeria will be called to camp next week to fine-tune their preparations for the defence of their title. “We will compete with all our might to ensure we win.”
