WAFCON: Playing for Nigeria wasn’t an easy choice, says Chioma Okafor

Super Falcons forward Chioma Okafor who has both Nigerian and Malawian nationality revealed that she is at home with the Super Falcons and that her parents never influenced her choice to play for Nigeria.

The 22-year-old was born to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother and isn’t a professional footballer yet said it wasn’t an easy choice for her but her parents respected the decision.

Even though she sat on the bench all through the competition in Morocco, Okafor is coming to terms with what it means to be Nigerian and appreciates the support of her teammates, who helped her settle in.

“They are amazing. Since the first day I stepped into camp, they’ve been very welcoming. It’s like I have 23 elder sisters who take care of me. They watch out for me as well, so I can’t thank them enough,” Okafor said.

“Playing for Nigeria wasn’t an easy decision. I took the time to evaluate my choices, and I found myself in a place where I didn’t want to make easy choices that I often tend to make.

“I also needed exposure as I wanted to play with people far better than me, to be in a very competitive environment, and that’s a constant with the Super Falcons.

“None of my parents influenced my choice. They respected the decision, and I take all responsibility for it.”
