For Ruth Usoro, the silver medal hanging around her neck in Glasgow represents far more than a place on the podium. It is the reward for months of perseverance, weeks of uncertainty and days spent battling illness.

ust six weeks earlier, the Nigerian long jumper admits she was nowhere near the level needed to compete for a medal.

She was not even expected to be at the 2026 Commonwealth Games until fate and the absence of one of Nigeria’s greatest athletes, opened an unexpected door.

Usoro grabbed that opportunity with both hands, soaring to a season’s best leap of 6.87 metres on her very first attempt to claim the women’s long jump silver medal, delivering one of Team Nigeria’s most inspiring stories in Glasgow.

Now, the Commonwealth Games medallist has opened up on the emotional journey behind her remarkable achievement, describing her podium finish as nothing short of a miracle.

Usoro announced herself immediately in the women’s long jump final with a superb opening leap of 6.87m (+2.7), a season’s best that temporarily put her at the top of the standings.

England’s Jazmin Sawyers eventually claimed the gold medal with a jump of 6.93m, but the Nigerian held on for silver to secure her first major international outdoor medal.

The achievement also marked a huge improvement on her sixth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and added another medal to Team Nigeria’s impressive athletics campaign in Glasgow.
