For a second successive season, UEFA Champions League (UCL) winners PSG face English opponents in the UEFA Super Cup, this year taking on Aston Villa at the 30,188 capacity Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.
PSG beat Tottenham on penalties in last season’s Super Cup, one of nine trophies they’ve claimed across the last two campaigns under the leadership of the great Luis Enrique.
They’re the only French team to ever win this competition, and after beating Premier League winners Arsenal in the UCL final in May, could be the first side from any nation to go back-to-back since Real Madrid in 2017 with another victory here.
After a gruelling couple of years, they’ve had a quiet summer, making just two major signings and playing only two pre-season matches so far. The under-strength Parisians failed to win either and will be without a number of key players again here as they chase yet more silverware.
Aston Villa are also past winners of this competition, triumphing over Barcelona back in 1982. They return to the Super Cup after a thumping 3-0 win over Freiburg in the Europa League final, marking the fifth time that boss Unai Emery has lifted Europe’s second-tier club competition.

The Spaniard – formerly in charge of PSG – has lost each of his prior three attempts at lifting the Super Cup, and his chances here haven’t been helped by a sobering summer that’s seen Villa lose arguably their two best players in Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans, while each of their three pre-season matches against top-flight European opposition ended in defeat.
These sides last met in the UCL quarter-finals in early 2025, and while they both picked up a win apiece, PSG progressed 5-4 on aggregate. PSG are unbeaten in ten matches in European competition against English teams since losing the second leg of that tie.
